It’s high time to start planning for the next Salon again. I understand Kiri’s speaking engagement at Juniata, originally a perfect excuse for a spring Salon, has been pushed back to the fall. I would be happy to organize one around my new digs in San Francisco, and Elizabeth and Donna have both graciously offered to host one as well. Time for a little poll. Which do you prefer?
* Aprilish, East Coast
* (Aprilish, West Coast won’t work for Donna, if I understand correctly)
* Julyish, East Coast
* Julyish, West Coast
* Or suggest something not on the list…

I am pretty flexible. All those sound good to me :) I feel pretty bad about not having made it out to the West Coast last year. So, I am all for a West coast Salon.
I think that Aprilish East Coast will be the easiest to arrange. So, I’d vote for a Huntingdon(Juniata) Salon in April. How about the weekend of the 19th?
One advantage of July would be the Arts Festival in State College.
OK, I think I just voted for everything. :)

My vote is for the next salon to be on the East Coast, and to simultantously plan a later one for the West Coast. My totally selfish reason is that I am going to visit Kiri in April, and 2 trips out west feels like a lot to me when I am already traveling out of state twice a week for work (this week’s menu: West Virginia and Florida!).
West-Coasters, is it prohibitively expensive or hard to plan for you to come here in April or May? If not, I vote for that, followed by a West Coast salon in the summer. If so, my vote’s for East Coast in July, followed by West Coast in the fall. Having been on the receiving end of high airfares from planning on short notice, I think we should defer to the airline fairies on that one.
Kim, I’m also really interested in hearing your thoughts on Salon-ing avec bebe. I am greedy and want as many of my salonniers as possible!
Whatever we decide, I miss you all and can’t wait to cook for you again.

I guess I ought to respond to my own request.
I should be able to make a Julyish Salon on either coast. April may be ok, but I need to talk to people on this end before I can commit. Specific times I cannot make:
* June 1-21 (field test and wedding)
* July 13-17 (AAAI, likely to be a conflict for Kiri as well)
Another issue is how many Salons we want to target per year. By increasing the number we might risk losing more constrained people.
Maybe we can designate one “major Salon” each year which we try hard to schedule so everyone can make it, allowing any number of “minor Salons” for subsets of the group. At a guess, the summer is probably the best time for the major Salon.

I’m so glad Trey posted this.
Well, I am trapped in the coal mines until mid-March. After that, will be permitted outdoors and into society for at least brief outings, ideally ramping back up into what we might approximately consider a “life”. (One highlight of rejoining the living is Elizabeth’s April visit!) I could probably manage a late-April East Coast salon, and that might be the best option given constraints others have voiced so far. I will be in Japan for 10 days in May, so would prefer not to have more traveling that month. :) I do have the same AAAI conflict as Trey (hey, maybe we should have a Salon in Chicago! :) ).

I suspect y’all would be too busy at your conference for Chicago to work. :P

I suggest the weekend of April 19th.
Also, I definitely consider going to Japan for 10 days a “life.” ;) Nice!

April 19 could work, unless that is the weekend my sister is visiting me. If so, how about the 26th?

Ok, for concreteness, let’s say the proposal is Juniata on the weekend of April 19th?
Kiri, when will you know if that conflicts with your sister’s visit?
I am fine with either the 19th or the 26th, and all the East Coast locations look basically the same from here, but I think we are getting to the point where a confirmed host location and an initial head count would be good.
Next steps I will undertake now:
* Make sure it’s a good time for Donna. (Does Donna read this blog? Hi, Donna!)
And after hearing from Kiri:
* Roughly schedule Salon events so people know how to time their travel.
* Tap everybody to make sure they know and to try and get a head count. (Especially important to relieve Elizabeth of this onerous duty.)

The 26th would be better for me — Apr 18-20 is NY Comic Con!
Going to Japan and to AAAI both betoken having a life (and not just in comparison to going to a comics convention ;-) )

Thank you for organizing this, Trey.
I can do either weekend, but prefer the 19th because I have a client hearing the Monday after the 26th.
As for venue, either works well for me – let’s poll Donna and Kim to see if there is any way to get both of them in the same town. Since you are emailing Donna, I will email Kim.

Uh oh — sounds like Natarajan and Elizabeth’s schedules conflict! I have a slight preference for the 26th because my sister *is* most likely visiting here on the 19th.

Well, I am torn, but I just want to say that although I love you all, Elizabeth’s preferences get my vote.
