J.D. Salinger once said, “What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it,you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though. ”
For me, such an author was Kurt Vonnegut, who passed away yesterday. The honesty, wit and most of all, love and compassion for humanity that shines through his writing has really touched me. I won’t say goodbye, dear book-friend, but merely “So it goes.”

I love that Salinger quote. In fact, it’s in my sigquote file and every so often I use it in my email. :)
I, too, was shocked to hear about Vonnegut. One positive thing: the Pasadena library has a display set up with all of his books (for easy check-out) and printouts of an article discussing his life. Among other things, he was apparently a big fan of public libraries — and they of him.

I must confess my untutoredness– I’ve never read any Vonnegut. Any suggestions on where to start? Once I’m finished the three books I’m in the middle of, I can tackle some Kurt!

To me, the great classic is Slaughterhouse Five. If you only read one, I’d make that the one. I’m glad to hear someone else has a reading backlog like I do! Happy reading.
