Hi all,
Don’t know how many of you saw “Firefly”, Joss Whedon’s brilliant (but thanks to $%#^! Fox, short-lived) “space western” (”but not boring, like she makes it sound”, to quote Wash), but the movie based on it, “Serenity”, opens this Friday. Seeing the show is not a prerequisite for seeing the movie– go, one and all! Or I shall be forced to write more posts with unseemly numbers of parenthetical comments! (Bwahahaha!)

I went to see it on Friday night! I haven’t watched the series (just the pilot, with you), but I thought it was an excellent movie that definitely stood on its own. Good sci-fi, gripping plot (including scary stuff and mystery), somewhat shallowly defined characters (apparently not time in the movie to fully flesh them out), but definitely entertaining. I’d recommend it to other salonniers, too. (I also really liked the music/soundtrack.)

I was pleasantly surprised by Serenity. I only saw one episode of Firefly and was not captivated by it. I am familiar with Joss Whedon fromBuffy the Vampire Slayer, which I never saw when it was on television, but have watched back to front repeatedly on DVD.
I really like Whedon’s ability to balance serious situations with comedy. I really like the antagonists… The Agent does evil for an end, and does not expect to be fully justified. I am frequently upset by movie villans who exist merely as random plot elements. I got the feeling while watching that the characters would have made more sense if I had seen the series, but at least they have motivations for their actions, which is a relief.
