I started this book this morning, and it’s turned out to be pretty gripping. If I recall correctly, Elizabeth has already read it. Have any other salonniers ventured between its pages?
I appreciate the book both for its intricate (of necessity) plot and for its characterization (usually the most important criterion, for me). I’d mark it as “highly recommended”, and I’m only on page 106 of 518. Kudos!

I’m so delighted to hear you are reading and enjoying this wonderful book, which I count among the best novels I read this year. The fact that it is Audrey Niffenegger’s very first novel makes it all the more impressive. To call a work “original” sounds like a lukewarm compliment, but in this case it’s the farthest thing from it. Niffenegger has written a novel that addresses universal themes (e.g., “what is my identity, and does it change over time?”) using a structure that has really never been used before. I could wax rhapsodic about this book more, but instead I am revising my review of the book (for those of you who don’t know, I am such a nerd that I write reviews of every novel I read) so that it won’t have spoilers, then I’ll post it to the site. Happy reading!

I didn’t realize that it was her first book. Wow! I’ve since finished the book, and found it powerful and disturbing. Her characterization is particularly good; the “voices” of Clare and Henry are quite distinct, not just from each other, but as they grow over time. I look forward to hearing your review :)
